Governor DeWine's Proclamation - October 2021 National Disability Employment Awareness Month
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine issued a proclamation:
WHEREAS, October 2021 marks the 76th anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month; and
WHEREAS, the State of Ohio recognizes the many contributions of Ohioans with disabilities who are active in the workforce; and
WHEREAS, the purpose of National Disability Employment Awareness Month is to educate the public about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America’s workers with disabilities; and
WHEREAS, the history of National Disability Employment Awareness Month dates to 1945 when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week”; and
WHEREAS, in 1962, the word “physically” was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities; and
WHEREAS, in 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to National Disability Employment Awareness Month; and
WHEREAS, workplaces welcoming of the talents of all people, including people with disabilities, are a critical part of our efforts to build an inclusive community and strong economy; and
WHEREAS, Ohio is wholly committed to maximizing employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities through education, training, collaboration, and awareness; and
WHEREAS, Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities is empowering Ohioans with disabilities through employment, and Ohio is setting a high standard by bringing together businesses and partners to break down the barriers faced by individuals with disabilities who are working or seeking employment; and
NOW, THEREFORE, We, Mike DeWine and Jon Husted, Governor and Lieutenant Governor of the State of Ohio, do hereby officially recognize October as
NATIONAL DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT
AWARENESS MONTH
on this 1st day of October 2021.
