Hello Vocational Rehabilitation Providers:
Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD) offers Summer Youth Work Experience (SYWE) services as a cornerstone for career and personal development for youth with disabilities each year. To kick start the Summer Youth season, OOD provides Summer Youth Training for providers early for students, families, counselors, and providers to plan ahead. The on-demand training consists of three videos that include:
- Summer Youth Work Experience 2023 (33:53 minutes);
- Safe and Sound: Preventing, Addressing, and Reporting Significant Incidents (2023 Update, 34:01 minutes); and
- Work Incentives for SYWE (recommended resource video, 13:05 minutes).
At least one person from each provider agency that plans to organize SYWE services and is approved in the Provider Management Program (PMP) must view the training and complete the acknowledgment in Ohio Learn. To view these training modules, you will need to log into OHID and launch Ohio Learn. If you do not have an OHID account, you will first need to create an account (see attached document for details on creating an account).
The SYWE training is being provided through on-demand trainings for your convenience and ease of use. This year, the core training video is greatly streamlined with a run time of just under 34 minutes. The training video is focused on the changes to the service for 2023 and offers key service and billing reminders. Flexibilities for SYWE will be offered as they have been implemented into the recent VR Fee Schedule update. Providers can offer SYWE from anywhere between 2 - 5 weeks and 10 - 12 hours per week for Level 1 or five weeks for 18-20 hours per week for Level 2.
For more detailed information about Summer Youth Work Experience: Services and Standards, providers and VR staff will have a new resource in the form of a dedicated appendix to the VR Provider Manual, Appendix F (link included below). Appendix F includes the most common questions and requested resources and will also be included in the next update of the VR Provider Manual.
Providers should check their PMP account to ensure they are approved for the SYWE services if they wish to provide them. Providers may choose to provide only one or both SYWE Level 1 and SYWE Level 2. Providers who have previously been approved to provide SYWE services in the PMP are automatically approved to deliver SYWE at Level 2. Providers who wish to offer SYWE at Level 1 will need to request this new service in the PMP.
Thank you to all providers who have offered input in this summer's training, with a special thank you to the Summer Youth Workgroup, who offered valuable contributions to this year's planning.
After viewing the training, please submit any questions to PCMU by completing the Summer Youth Work Experience 2023 Provider Q&A Questions Form by January 18, 2023. Questions will be answered during an optional live Q&A session via Microsoft Teams on Friday, January 20 at 2:00 p.m.
The Q&A session will not be recorded; however, if there are themes in questions not covered in the training or the new Appendix F, an email will be sent out with that information. An American Sign Language interpreter will be available for the Q&A session.
To request an ADA reasonable accommodation for this training, please contact Melanie Seckler (email@example.com) no later than January 13, 2023.
Attached you will find a job aid on accessing and completing the training in Ohio Learn, along with the PDF of each PowerPoint, Site Collection Tool, and Summer Youth Appendix F.
We look forward to a great new year!
